My First Encounter of a Foreigner/Foreign Culture
Professor季淳shared two stories for everyone. One is about the pre-president Bush, and another is about a vice president Qual. Both the two stories is mean to courage us not to be afraid of speaking English.
泓鈞：I went a two-day field trip in 新竹台中 with international students. We brought them to dance with 祖靈祭, and went to the biggest night market in 台中, 逢甲夜市.The international students don’t have the concept of line up. We divide their friends into several groups but they just want to hang out with their friends. They felt fun but I need to hold the camp for foreigners, and must be more careful about the details.
Q: How do you translate the 祖靈祭 for them?(季淳)
A: they think it’s divine.
昱智：I have a foreign roommate from China. After getting along with a long time, I find that we’re childish.
Q: Where is the Chinese roommate from? (季淳)
A: 西安
Q: Not to talk about political problem?(泓鈞)
A: Yeah
Q: What does he usually do on the weekend? Because there is always a stack of books on the my Chinese roommate’s table.
旻霓：I have exchanged postcards on website since my senior high school for two years. You may get surprised when you get the card from other countries like Russia, China, America, Germany, etc.
思吟：It is my first time to eat Mcdonald’s today. I’m really shocked about the very mass and unhealthy production. It’s cheap, but cause the lower class people much poorer.
家蓁：I went to a British language school in this summer vacation. My roommates come from different countries. They love drinking all night, and it is the first time I drink. From this experience, I realize we live in a global village, where we share the same in the world.
秦芳：When I’m 7 years old, I went to Singapore with my family. I know it is prohibited to eat chewing gum, and people obey the rule strictly in Singapore. However, I think it is not appropriate to bring child abroad too early, because they don’t know local history to experience native live.
泓良：One time, I met a girl coming from Canada in Chen-Kong University. She’s a girl paying more attention to local society, which sets her apart from other international students.
晏寧：This summer I went to Nepal to be an international volunteer with 伊甸 foundation. We stay there for 15 days, and there’re no gas and water power. We prepare English class for those children, and it’s the first time for me to be a teacher. I recommend everyone go abroad to do International volunteer and experience local culture.
偉榕：The first time I go abroad is to Singapore. The direction is totally opposite from Vaiwan. It’s clean and good sight-seeing. The rule of not eating chewing gum cause an interesting episode when we pass through the customs.
盈君：Being in Church brings me many foreign experiences. I met a couple who shared the Mongolia life for me. Besides, I joined a camp held by my church and it is a difficult but interesting experience.
紹伶：I was the Yi dancer of Confucius ceremony when I was an elementary school student. There are always lots of tourist will visit the Confucius temple. One time, during our practice a foreign tourist asked me about the dance. I was too little to introduce the Yi dance completely, just smiling at him, and show part of the dance for him.
馨誼：I have an international student friend from Arab that we met each other in school class. We have many in common, and I think he is not radical but humorous. I am not afraid of talking with foreigner since met him.
